THE FLAT CAP EDIT / THE QUESTIONS

Flat Cap FAQ

A little background, a little reassurance, and answers to the questions that come with a good cap.

START HERE

Is the flat cap only for people from a certain place or with a certain heritage?

No. You do not need a particular ancestry, nationality, or hometown to wear an ordinary flat cap.

The cap has strong historical associations with Britain and Ireland, including Scottish and Irish heritage and working life. Those connections are part of its story, rather than a requirement for wearing one. If you like it and it fits, you can make it part of your own style.

A FEW MORE THINGS YOU MIGHT WONDER

01

Can anyone wear a flat cap, regardless of age or gender?

Yes. Choose one because you like it and it feels comfortable. There is no age or gender you need to be to enjoy a flat cap; the shape, fabric, and fit can be as understated or as expressive as you like.

02

Is a flat cap the same as a newsboy cap?

They are close relatives, but the shapes differ. A classic flat cap has a lower, smoother crown that slopes towards the peak. A newsboy or bakerboy cap is fuller, usually with several panels and a button on top. Names vary between makers. Compare the styles →

03

How should a flat cap fit?

It should feel secure without squeezing or leaving pressure marks. It should stay in place when you move, rather than sliding over your eyes. Measure your head and compare the result with the particular maker’s size chart; sizing can vary between styles. Read Lock & Co.’s fitting guide ↗

04

Can I wear one without looking like I am in costume?

Our suggestion: start with clothes you already enjoy wearing. A simple cap with a plain jumper, jeans, or an everyday coat is an easy introduction. You do not need to build a period outfit around it. See how different people wear theirs →

05

Are flat caps only for cold weather?

No. Fabric and lining matter more than the name of the cap. Wool and tweed are popular cooler-weather choices; lighter cotton and linen options are also available. Choose the weight that feels right for the weather. Examples of different fabrics ↗

06

Does the peak have to face forwards?

Forwards is the conventional look, but wearing one backwards is a personal styling choice. The cap’s construction and fit will affect how comfortable that feels. Try both and see what you prefer. Explore the wearers directory →
